Spain’s island of Mallorca has long been a favorite vacation destination for its sunny beaches and Mediterranean mountain landscapes, but in recent years, the capital of Palma has stolen the spotlight. The Old Quarter is undeniably atmospheric, its mansions adorned with wrought iron balconies and the sandstone cathedral rising majestically over the waterfront. (This colossal monument is in fact a UNESCO World Heritage site that’s not to be missed.) What’s particularly magical about Palma de Mallorca is the new crop of design-centric boutique hotels that stress authenticity. We previously reported on the Hotel Sant Francesc, which opened in 2015 with a gorgeous rooftop overlooking the Old Town. Others have followed suit, like the Hotel Es Princep.
The latest to cross our radar is the Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden, which just debuted on a quite cobblestone street in Palma’s Old Quarter, a quick stroll from the harbor. The boutique hotel occupies a restored medieval mansion with historic features frescoes and timber beams. Here it’s all about design—from the contemporary artwork and Art Deco pieces to the Mallorcan antiques and leafy vegetation that’s been brought inside to green the interiors.
There are only 24 suites, each uniquely decorated and some equipped with fireplaces and large soaking tubs. The best room in the house is the Grand Suite, which comes with an in-room bar and cocktail set. A hotel highlight is the “Secret Garden,” the largest private garden in Palma’s Old Quarter, designed with a heated pool. There’s also a spa treatment area, rooftop, restaurant and terrace bar.
