A new, independent hotel debuted in Portland, Oregon this month, and it’s all about connecting with the local culture and urban scene. The former Hotel Modera underwent a complete renovation and rebranding to become the Hotel Zags Portland. Situated in the Fountain District, the property has 174 guestrooms (including six suites) with either views on the city or the courtyard, which—with its stone walkways and leafy Living Wall—took its design inspiration from the Columbia River Gorge. The courtyard also features a fireplace and green roof. Indeed, the hotel’s look is modern in style, taking a cue from the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
A distinctive, stand-out amenity at the Hotel Zags Portland is the so-called Gear Shed, a collaboration with local brands. It’s stocked with everything you’d need for an urban adventure in Portland: complimentary skateboards, hover boards, scooters, fishing poles, digital cameras and more. Another cool feature? The vintage vending machine which distributes artwork by local artists.
The Hotel Zags Portland aims to be a convivial gathering place for both guests and in-the-know locals. Overseen by famed local chef David Machado, the Nel Centro restaurant serves a menu with cuisine inspired by northern Italy and southeast France. A highlight will be the “ABZs of Portland”— a series of events and classes hosted by Portland artists and entrepreneurs (think concerts by local musicians and terrarium-building classes in the courtyard.)
The property joins Pebblebrook Hotel Trust’s “Unofficial Z Collection,” which includes Hotel Zetta San Francisco, Hotel Zelos San Francisco, Hotel Zeppelin San Francisco, Hotel Zephyr Fisherman’s Wharf, and Hotel Zoe Fisherman’s Wharf.
