When you picture Bora Bora, do visions of turquoise lagoons dance in your head? Lagoons best appreciated from a resort’s overwater bungalows? (You’re easily forgiven. After all, author James Michener pinpointed a Bora Bora hideaway as “the most beautiful lagoon in the world.”) The islands of Tahiti are comprised of 118 islands and atolls, some volcanic, some coral—all fringed by white sand beaches, lush vegetation and turquoise waters. Here in this tropical paradise, French Polynesia’s most exclusive InterContinental Resort is upping the luxury quotient with new overwater suites equipped with private infinity pools.
Located on Motu Piti Aau, the “islet of two hearts,” the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa is popular for honeymoons and destination weddings (there’s an overwater chapel!). Recently the luxury resort launched a multi-million dollar renovation program adding new “Pool Premium Overwater Villas.” By the end of 2017, the InterContinental Bora Bora will also unveil four new two-bedroom overwater villas. (The Diamond End of Pontoon overwater villas will be closed through December 1 for the project, which also adds private plunge pools to 10 villas.)
It’s not just about the private pools—though we must say they look pretty enticing!—but these new overwater bungalows have other cool perks like glass coffee tables in the living room which showcase the marine life swimming below. We also like the sound of the private deck, from which you can take a dip directly in the lagoon.
With views of Mount Otemanu, and the Deep Ocean Spa specializing in seawater therapies, this five-star resort isn’t a bad place to be marooned—though if you’re eager to explore Bora Bora, it's also well situated for adventurous excursions.
