It’s been years in the making, and now, after several setbacks and delays, The Oberoi, Marrakech is gearing up to open its gilded gates in Morocco. Even in Marrakech’s over-the-top hotel scene, this is a highly anticipated project; construction on this palace hotel has been underway since 2014. Situated a 25-minute drive from the Old City’s Djema el-Fna square, The Oberoi, Marrakech comprises a 28-acre estate of verdant gardens, orchards and olive groves with the snow-capped Atlas mountains in the background. Taking its design cues from Morocco’s traditional architecture, the hotel has some features inspired by Medersa Ben Youssef, the centuries-old Islamic college in Marrakech—a masterpiece of ceramic tile work, elaborately carved doors and courtyards with reflecting pools.
There will be 84 rooms, suites and villas. Note that 76 are equipped with private pools and gardens. Designed with an indoor pool and hammam, the Oberoi Spa will offer plant-based treatments based on authentic Moroccan and Ayurvedic wellness therapies. There will be three restaurants offering international and Moroccan cuisine. Overlooking the gardens and Atlas Mountains, the terrace bar will be a sought-after spot for a sunset aperitif. Rounding out the facilities are the Kids Club and event space including a 3,230-square-foot function room.
The Oberoi, Marrakech is now accepting stays starting from December 1, 2019. This is the first hotel in Morocco for the Delhi-based Oberoi Group, which currently comprises 33 luxury hotels, two river cruises on the Nile and one boat exploring the backwaters of Kerala.
