Amerikalinjen: Oslo’s New Digs Opens March 15

Opening March 15, Amerikalinjen, a boutique hotel in Oslo, occupies the original headquarters for the Norwegian America Line. The iconic building, which turns 100 this year, is now home to 122 rooms and suites, several restaurants and a chic jazz club.

What we love: The entire first floor of the hotel is basically just for food. Atlas Brasserie has a casual setting, while Pier 42 has a cocktail bar named after the pier in Manhattan that received Norwegian American Line ships, will use replica glasses by Hadeland Glassworks (who created the glasses for cruisers in the 1950s) and will serve decades-themed cocktails with each decade featuring a different liquor. Tip: Martin Andersen (martin.andersen@amerikalinjen.com), commercial director, tells us he’s most excited about the Haven, a green space with a glass ceiling where guests can relax or grab a bite to eat.

Andersen also says that Gustav, a jazz club in the basement, will be the place to be on Friday and Saturday nights.

The top digs will be the Triton Suite, which has a balcony facing the ultra-modern Oslo Opera House, a separate living area and a spacious bathroom with a tub. Guests will also be able to request a “floating bar,” complete with a barman to sling drinks in their room for them and any guests.

We’re excited by the hotel’s actual floating sauna, located in the fjords. Guests are guided by a fitness expert where they will take a morning swim in the chilly water followed by relaxing time in the warm sauna. Fitness junkies can also opt for hotel-led runs through the city to explore the neighborhood.

Andersen says the Akerselva River Trail is one of his favorites, while the Nordmarka Forest is great for the longer runs. Tip: For a healthy bite after the run, we hear Atlas Cafe is a great option, offering steal-cut oats that are best paired with a fresh smoothie prepped by chef Steffen Hansen.

Amerikalinjen, a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, is near several top sites in Oslo, including the Opera, the Munch Museum, shopping in Kvadraturen and the nightlife on Youngstorget.
