Last June, longtime regulars, Pierre and Laurie Lapeyre, purchased The Point Resort in Saranac Lake, NY. This year, they launched a renovation program, which was completed June 1.
The 11-room, adults-only Relais & Châteaux resort took up the task of updating all guestrooms and common spaces, with the highlight being the winterization of The Boathouse, the resort’s largest and most requested accommodation. The Point has been closed since April, and in its new life, is meant more than ever, to reflect its history as a “Great Camp” once owned by the Rockefellers.
General Manager Cameron Karger called the property “more original than it’s been in a very, very long time.”
As part of the multimillion-dollar renovations, each guestroom (which are located in several buildings on the property) received new furnishings, fabrics and finishes, as well as enhancements to the bathrooms. Rooms that were without a patio have been given one. The 950-square-foot Boathouse (which was only available May through October) has received insulation, radiant heating, period-specific windows, a new foyer and a roof above the entry.
The Great Hall now sports new fabrics, lighting and furniture. Guests dine together here, with the kitchen headed by Executive Chef Loic Leperlier, who also has experience in a three-Michelin-star restaurant. Note: Dining in the Great Hall is black tie on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Good to know: If you’re interested in cooking, making cocktails, tasting wines or just about any other activity, The Point is an open property where guests have access to everything. Reach out to Karger (ckarger@thepointresort.com) to put together a class, or even to ask for an apron to assist Leperlier in the kitchen.
A focus of The Point is “unplugging,” meaning there is Wi-Fi available only in the office. Not to worry, since there are miles of hiking trails, plus boating, kayaking, water skiing, fishing, tennis, golf, and more available to guests during the summer. In winter, guests can cross-country ski, snowshoe, ice skate, ice fish, and even learn how to play curling.
Each evening, the glass-enclosed electric boat Elco (Electric Launch Company) goes out on the water for cocktails. Breakfast and lunch on the boat are also options.
The Point is about a five-hour drive from both New York City and Boston, but Cape Air flies direct to Adirondack Regional Airport from Boston Logan International Airport. Other options include any major carrier that flies into Albany, which will be followed by car service to the resort (just over two hours).
