A new private island resort is set to make a splash in 2018 off the southern Cambodia coast. Situated in the Koh Rong archipelago, Alila Villas Koh Russey will be just 10 minutes from the mainland—a region, described as the “new Cambodian riviera,” that’s in the midst of a tourism boom. The tropical setting—an island covered in bamboo and fringed with white sandy beaches—is particularly dreamy. (Koh Russey used to be outpost of the Cambodian Navy and is still administered by the Navy today.) Despite the lost-in-paradise appeal, the resort will be easily accessed by regular shuttle boats.
There will be 61 pavilions and villas, designed in a minimalist modern style with indoor and outdoor living spaces blending in with the environment. Facilities will run the gamut from an outdoor cinema to a yoga studio with complimentary classes. An organic garden will supply the restaurant, while the swimming pool overlooks the beach. There will also be a spa and top-notch gym. The concierge team will be able to arrange local experiences like island hopping, temple tours and excursions to the mountains of Bokor National Park.
Meaning “Surprise” in Sanskrit, Alila aims to impress guests with—to quote—“a combination of innovative design and luxury in unique locations, set apart by an unprecedented level of private space, crafted artisanship, personalized hospitality, and bespoke learning journeys.” With a focus on sustainable tourism, the Singapore-based brand has properties in Bali, Goa, Oman, Jakarta, and now California—as the Ventana Big Sur has reopened as the first Alila Hotels & Resorts property in North America.
