Rosewood Hotels & Resorts is set to make its debut in South America with the opening of Rosewood São Paulo on December 15. Centrally located next to the Avenida Paulista, the hotel will be part of Cidade Matarazzo, a new lifestyle development based around a century-old property. The project has been designed by Jean Nouvel and Philippe Starck.
Occupying one of the area’s few remaining historical landmarks, the new hotel will be rooted in a former maternity hospital known as Condessa Filomena Matarazzo Maternity, an early 20th-century heritage building. The Rosewood São Paulo team has worked to revive the historic hospital while preserving its original identity.
Rosewood São Paulo’s grounds also include the Chapel of Santa Luzia, another historic building that has been restored to retain its ornate architecture from 1922. Throughout the renovation work, the chapel’s original foundation revealed pieces of an intricately adorned building, which have been refurbished and incorporated into the revived structure. Pretty cool: The "rebirth" of Chapel of Santa Luzia is timed to its 100-year anniversary, and when it reopens, it will continue to be used for weddings and other celebrations.
What can guests expect? Upon completion, Rosewood São Paulo will have 160 guestrooms and 100 Rosewood Residences spread across the fully restored Matarazzo Maternity and a new vertical garden tower designed by Jean Nouvel with interiors by Philippe Starck. Amenities will include a cinema, music studio, two pools, ample event space and Asaya, Rosewood’s well-being concept. The property will also have a permanent collection of art with over 450 works by 57 contemporary Brazilian artists displayed throughout the hotel complex.
Of the six dining venues, Le Jardin will extend from the lobby to the hotel gardens, serving modern cuisine all day. Blaise, inspired by French-Swiss novelist Blaise Cendrars, will serve a blend of French Swiss and French cuisine in the historic Maternity building. Taraz, the third restaurant, is located facing the centuries-old olive trees lining the square, and décor from local artists and designers. Serving South American cuisine, the sharing-style menu has been designed by Chef Felipe Bronze and showcases the art of wood-fired cooking. Additional outlets include Rabo di Galo, a jazz bar with pocket shows featuring bespoke libations and classic Brazilian bar snacks alongside live music; the Emerald Garden Pool & Bar, a restaurant amidst tropical greenery offering family-friendly fare; and Belavista Rooftop Pool & Bar, an exclusive adults-only space with views of the city.
The hotel’s food and beverage team is led by Chef Felipe Rodrigues, who joins the property after 11 years of experience in international restaurants and hotels in Europe. The restaurants have several female leaders, including Rachel Codreanschi as executive sous chef, Saiko Isawa as pastry chef and Ana Paula Ulrich as head of mixology. Codreanschi has worked in kitchens across São Paulo and globally, including Salva Vida in Tel Aviv.
