Okahirongo Elephant Lodge of Sanctuary Retreats, Abercrombie & Kent’s portfolio of luxury safari lodges and river cruise boats, is undergoing an extensive refurbishment, set to be unveiled this April. The lodge, located in Namibia’s distant northwest, is surrounded by the vast wilderness of Kaokoland, with a varied choice of activities for exploration, adventure and discovery. It offers seven individual suites and a two-bedroom family suite.
Each suite has an en-suite bathroom, complete with an indoor shower. The family suite has two en-suite bedrooms, a private terrace and an open lounge. After a day’s safari and exploration of the Namibian scenery, guests can unwind on the shaded patio and daybed on the private veranda. Giraffes can be seen wandering down the river valley if they look towards the desert, where the shifting sand dunes can reach a height of 984 feet.
The social spaces offer panoramic views of the infinity pool and the hills beyond. In the main lounge, ceramic amphorae, curios and literature are displayed on recessed shelves on each side of an open fire. Guests can unwind before heading to the redesigned dining room, which sports distressed wooden furnishings and giant rattan lampshades.
Guests can take a game drive with expert Himba guides to track desert elephants, lions, giraffes and plentiful gemsbok, springbok, steenbok, kudu and exotic bird species. Those searching for history can take a trip to the clay castles of the Hoarusib river valley. These towering natural wonders are thousands of years old and soar hundreds of feet high from various gorges along the riverbed. Additionally, guests can spot the Lone Men of Kaokoland while on scenic drives. These almost life-size rock sculptures blend seamlessly with their surroundings. At the end of a day’s adventure, they can stop to sip a sundowner as the sun sets over the dunes.
