Proper is proliferating. Following its splashy debut in San Francisco in Fall 2017, the buzzed-about lifestyle hotel brand is heading south. The Santa Monica Proper Hotel will arrive on the scene in July 2019, bringing Kelly Wearstler’s compelling design to 700 Wilshire Blvd, where an Arthur E. Harvey-designed Spanish Colonial Revival building dating from 1928 will get sleek architectural additions (and a new lease of life). In fact, this will be the first luxury lifestyle hotel to open in Santa Monica in two decades.
Besides Wearstler’s attention-grabbing design and artwork by emerging L.A. artists, here’s what to expect in the 271-room hotel. The 3,000-square-foot Proper x Surya Spa will be a joint project with the founders of Surya Ayurvedic Spa; the program won’t just be limited to therapeutic massage or steam treatments with plant-based products. There will also be yoga classes on a dedicated second floor terrace, plus cooking and meditation.
The restaurants are guaranteed to draw the cool kids. The signature restaurant will be a collaboration with award-winning chefs Jessica Koslow (Sqirl, Silverlake) and Gabriela Camara (Contramar, Cala). Not to mention the rooftop space—kitted out with a pool, bar and bistro—overlooking the ocean. Last but not least: We like the sound of the “boards and bikes at the ready for a surf or ride on the beach path.”
Santa Monica Proper Hotel isn’t the only Proper in the pipeline. Proper Hospitality, developed by the folks behind Los Angeles-based The Kor Group, is planning two other urban additions this year: Austin Proper Hotel & Residences and Downtown Los Angeles Proper Hotel. Their goal? Deliver creative, cultural immersion and one-of-a-kind F&B concepts while also serving up top-notch services and amenities.
