Rwanda’s tourism is on the rise, with a new crop of luxury lodges by world-renowned companies like Wilderness Safaris, One&Only, and Singita serving adventurers keen to explore the country and see its remarkable population of endangered mountain gorillas. Following in the footsteps of Wilderness Safaris, which opened Bisate Lodge next to Volcanoes National Park in 2017, Singita will unveil its first Rwanda property at the edge of the park in August 2019.
Singita Kwitonda Lodge and Kataza House, an exclusive, stand-alone villa, are part of a conservation partnership with the Rwandan government and local communities. Notably, Singita is part of the One Planet Living framework, incorporating sustainable operations into all of its lodges. In Rwanda, this conservation focus can be found in the use of local materials in the construction of the lodge, plus efforts to minimize waste, save energy and water. Local stone masons, weavers and ceramicists were recruited to work on the design and decor at the lodge, which features indoor and outdoor areas to take advantage of the scenic setting on 178 acres surrounding Volcanoes National Park.
Eight suites and the four-bedroom Kataza House are connected by volcanic rock pathways to the central lodge, where you’ll find a fire pit, interactive kitchen, bar and wine cellar. Spa services will be available in guest suites. Singita currently operates 12 luxury lodges and camps in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania—where the Singita Faru Faru Lodge recently unveiled a makeover. Singita Kwitonda Lodge will be the company’s first foray into Rwanda.
