Just in time for the winter ski season in Switzerland, Tschuggen Hotel Group is set to debut the Valsana Hotel & Apartments on December 7. The property is situated next to the forest at the entrance of Arosa, a popular holiday resort town located at an altitude of 5,900 feet above sea level. Strategically positioned at the end of the wide Schanfigg Valley, Arosa—established as a resort in 1877—gets ample sunshine from its location at the bottom of the valley, protected from the wind by the surrounding mountain peaks. There’s a ski lift within a short walk of the Valsana Hotel.
Founded more than 30 years ago, the privately-owned Tschuggen Hotel Group operates a small collection of five-star hotels including the Tschuggen Grand Hotel Arosa, the Carlton Hotel in St. Moritz, and the Hotel Eden Roc in Ascona. The three-star Albergo Carcani in Ascona is also part of the hotel group. The Valsana will be the latest addition.
What’s so cool about the Valsana hotel is its use of high-tech carbon-neutral technology. It will be the first hotel in Switzerland to be powered by an “Ice Vault,” which, to quote the official press release, is a “large underground Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system that allows excess thermal energy to be stored and used by extracting the energy from the water until controlled freezing takes place.”
The hotel’s focus on sustainability won’t detract from the luxury quotient. There will be 40 rooms and nine family apartments, equipped with big balconies for taking in the views. The spa will offer saunas, a hammam and pool, while the lobby-cum-restaurant “Twist” will serve up traditional regional fare with a fresh contemporary spin. Fun perk: Guests are free to use the hotel’s electric car charging stations.
