Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) has added six new properties in China, Croatia, Greece, Spain, the U.K., and the U.S.
Rothay Manor: This manor house is set within the Lake District in Ambleside, U.K. The 23-key property revealed eight new suites in "The Pavillion," completing the hotel’s five-year, $1.49 million renovation. Half of the new suites have private courtyard gardens and are dog-friendly, with many rooms providing dog beds, towels and treats. Pets can also dine with their families in the hotel’s casual eatery, Brathay Room. The Rosette restaurant serves a menu fusing Japanese and Scandinavian cuisine. Guests can enjoy local guided walks, foraging experiences, indoor rock climbing and horseback riding.
SLH Insider Tip: Make sure to take the short walk to Todd Crag, where you will be rewarded with beautiful views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding fells. It’s short and steep but worth the effort.
Hotel Villa Soro: This pet-friendly, year-round boutique hotel in San Sebastián, Spain has been updated by the Soldevila-Ferrer family, owners of two SLH Mallorca icons—Sant Francesc and Can Ferrereta Hotel. The former aristocratic villa was originally designed by architect Luis Elizalde in the late 19th century. The main house comprises 15 guestrooms and has a large guest salon complete with a log-burning fire place, bar and a library. The villa’s former stables are adjacent to the building and house a further 10 rooms, with some featuring a private garden. The Eguzki Bar and Garden is offers cocktails and small plates.
SLH Insider Tip: The hotel enjoys a vibrant location in Barrio de Gros, giving a great choice of Michelin-starred restaurants (Arzak, Mugaritz), cult pintxos bars (Ganbara, La Viña), local markets, and cultural institutions (Museo San Telmo, botanical gardens ) all within walking distance.
Palazzo Rainis Hotel & Spa: Set on the shores of Croatia’s Istrian coast, this beachside resort is a reconstruction of the former Villa Rainis, built in the style of neo-Renaissance Venetian palazzos by the Rainis family, who moved from Venice in the 19th century. The hotel’s 16 rooms, including the palatial Bel Etage suite, have wrought-iron balconies, parquet floors and handpicked furnishings. Guests can dine at restaurant Chemistry, or sip on beverages at the bar Potions—both names nod to the original owner’s 63-year career as a pharmacist.
SLH Insider Tip: This corner of Croatia is a food lover’s paradise. Istria is renowned for prosciutto and excellent goat cheese, local “Boškarin” cattle, famous “fuži” pasta and, of course, the truffle. Ask the friendly hotel staff about wine-tasting and truffle-hunting tours.
Summer Senses Luxury Resort: This hilltop retreat in Greece’s Paros sits above the Punda Beach. It overlooks the Aegean Sea with views across to neighboring Naxos. Guests can hop from one lagoon-like swimming pool to another, while the shallow lounging pool is ideal for families with children. The property offers 100 contemporary rooms and suites. The Punda Beach is a stone’s throw away.
SLH Insider Tip: Every space at Summer Senses is luxurious, but Galazia Hytra really ups the ante. A collaboration with the Michelin-starred Hytra in Athens, it fuses the best local produce with fine dining flair, for out-of-this-world Greek gastronomic enjoyment under the stars.
The Roundtree: This property in Amagansett, New York, offers five private cottages, and 15 guestrooms and suites in a century-old former barn. Guests can also book the entire Beach House, where they can channel the same inspiration that Amagansett’s surrounding farmland provided to its former owner, American playwright Neil Simon. Guests can hop on an electric beach buggy and head to the beach. Children can invoke their entrepreneurial skills by managing The Lemonade Stand on property. Older guests can partake in a customized wine tour on the North Fork, home to more than 60 wineries. This pooch-friendly beachside retreat offers canine amenities, from water bowls to a welcome doggy treat.
SLH Insider Tip: Ask the hotel team to set up a bonfire dinner on the nearby, locals’ favored Indian Wells beach, complete with a quintessential clambake. It’s one of the most magical ways to spend an evening Out East.
Yangshuo Jora Hotel: At this 35-key resort in Guilin, China, guests are greeted by sunrise backed by the mist-tipped Karst mountains every morning. The guestrooms offer mountain vistas or Lijiang River views and guests can curl up with one of the hotel’s 500 books. Advocating the concepts of “green and healthy” and “local ingredients,” Shishan Restaurant integrates Chinese culinary heritage with traditional Western or Japanese flavors.
SLH Insider Tip: Wind down for the day at the hotel’s complimentary tea time from 8 to 9 p.m. at the cozy Kong Tea Room. Accommodating only eight guests at a time, appreciate the collections of tea potteries in the room while the tea master brews tea according to guest preferences or seasonal highlights.
