Belmond's Splendido Hotel in Portofino Reopens After Makeover

Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino has reopened for the season following a multi-year renovation by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio (MBDS). The 16th-century Benedictine monastery-turned-hotel, perched on a hillside offering spectacular vistas of the Bay of Portofino, unveiled a refresh of its rooms, suites, pool, restaurants and a cocktail bar. In addition, guests will be welcomed to the first permanent Dior Spa in Italy. On June 29, Belmond will also debut Villa Beatrice, a private summer residence overlooking the sea.

Guests will notice the newly updated lobby, along with its redesigned bar, Baratta Sedici. Its whitewashed walls provide a fresh canvas for a hand-painted botanical mural, while the menu showcases a range of cocktails, a collection of vintage spirits and fine wines.

Throughout the newly redesigned rooms and suites, guests can expect traditional Midollino Weave, inspired by the Chiavari rattan tradition, and Albissola ceramics. Furnishings have been sourced from local estate sales and auction houses, with some pieces delicately restored and painted in the Genoese style. Signature suites include the Baronessa Suite, designed to mimic "the drawing room of a well-traveled Italian aristocrat." La Baronessa has a private-entrance garden with direct access to the hotel’s panoramic pool and a terrace with views of the Gulf of Portofino.

Both La Terrazza, the fine dining restaurant, and Splendido Grill offer menus that honor the region’s culinary heritage and celebrate seasonal ingredients. Guests can enjoy authentic flavors complemented by a selection of beverages and sunset views.

Enriching the hotel’s wellness offering is Italy’s first permanent Dior Spa, set against the backdrop of the Portofino Natural Park. Situated on the second floor of the hotel, the indoor-outdoor sanctuary offers a nature-inspired wellness experience with four treatment cabins, a Dior Spa boutique and a private terrace overlooking the Bay of Portofino. The Dior Spa at Splendido expands on Le Jardin des Rêves—an al fresco treatment space within the hotel’s gardens. Other wellness facilities include a saltwater pool, a fitness center with personal training sessions available on request, a hillside tennis court overlooking the sea and bespoke wellness excursions such as nature walks and kayaking adventures along the Ligurian coast.

On June 29, Splendido will unveil Villa Beatrice, Belmond’s newest private villa in Portofino. Spread across three floors, this historical family residence blends Gothic Revival and Art Nouveau stylings. The exterior murals, grand arched windows and original frescoes were preserved to honor the villa’s architectural legacy. Just a five-minute stroll from the hotel, this palazzo is perched on a spot overlooking the Gulf of Tigullo, offering panoramic views and private access to the sea.
