California’s Terranea Resort celebrated its eighth birthday in a big way: a room renovation by the San Francisco-based interior design firm BAMO.
Perched on the bluffs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, 30 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles, Terranea first opened in 2009 and quickly garnered awards for its golf course, destination spa, fitness center, kids club and eight dining outlets.
BAMO Principal Anne Wilkinson actually worked on the resort’s original interiors, so she was a natural to oversee the revamp. The style is a melange of contemporary California and the Spanish Colonial look of Santa Barbara. As Wilkinson explained in an interview on the hotel’s blog: “The overall room aesthetic is fresh, contemporary California with nods to the resort's Spanish Colonial architecture and the modern glamour of nearby Los Angeles. Eclectic details, such as deep paneled woodwork, nail head trim, and wrought metal wall sconces tie in elements of Santa Barbara style.”
There’s a new color scheme in the guestrooms—a palette of blue-grey, warm wood, and neutral earth tones—and a slew of new guest-friendly conveniences were added, like built-in places to charge your devices, and a chaise lounge at the window for taking in the views.
Booking tips: The 2,200-square-foot Vanderlip Suite is the crème de la crème. The two Shearwater Suites, measuring 1,800 square feet, were designed for entertaining. There’s an open-plan main living space and a master bedroom. The dining area is equipped with a stone-topped dining table and decorated with a large abstract painting and a blown glass pendant. Nice perk: The Shearwater Suite on the ground floor comes with its own private patio and fire pit overlooking the ocean.
