W Hotels Worldwide, part of Marriott International, has expanded its footprint in China with the opening of W Chengdu.
As UNESCO’s first "City of Gastronomy" in Asia, Chengdu is known for its Sichuan cuisine. Evolving from an ancient city with rich cultural traditions such as Sichuan Opera, to one known as “the Silicon Valley of China,” Chengdu is a hub for world commerce and home to more than 200 Fortune 500 companies. Through a W Insider, who can plan experiences that are off-the-beaten track and connect guests with the latest happenings in Chengdu, guests can score a table at the hottest new restaurant, get tips on the best local street wear boutiques in TaiKoo Li, or snag tickets to a sold-out show .
About the hotel: Inside the Living Room (the W brand’s take on a hotel lobby) there is an interactive, LED virtual waterfall, created by art collective teamLab. When guests stand on its platform, they obstruct the course of the waterfall, causing the flow of water to change directions. Chengdu’s mascot, the giant panda, also makes an appearance through a pair of svelte pandas sporting sunglasses rendered in fiberglass and a giant blue panda sculpture.
W Chengdu has 297 guestrooms and suites, with the Extreme WOW Suite being the top digs. The room has 3,900 square feet of flexible space, including a sculptural bar and lounge area. Custom panda cushions and teapots in each guestroom give a nod to Chengdu’s local culture and story. W guests can also now refresh with a set of luxurious bath amenities from sustainable beauty brand DAVINES, made from natural eco-friendly ingredients in Parma, Italy.
As for dining, W Chengdu has a variety of venues with two restaurants and two bars. The living room is the place to mingle over crafted cocktails and a selection of bites. The interiors of Yao Yen match the modern Cantonese and Sichuan menu paired with fragrant regional teas. Emblazoned with graphic neon calligraphy in Sichuan dialect and hand-painted paper-cut patterns, Zing is an all-day dining venue serving fresh Southeast Asian flavors. Lastly, Spark is a rooftop patio with panoramas that offer party packages, including wine and spirits, as well as regular sessions with DJ talent.
Guests can also treat themselves to a treatment at Away Spa, which has three treatment rooms and uses luxe beauty brands Biologique Recherche, Comfort Zone and I Plus Q. For those who need to detox before they party on, W Chengdu’s Fit gym includes a spacious Pilates studio and indoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi, which has a captivating 270-degree LCD feature wall.
In addition, W Chengdu offers just under 28,000 square feet of flexible meeting spaces spanning over two floors; the Great Room is a 13,000-square-foot, pillar-less space.
