News from Nantucket: When it reopens for the season on April 18, The Wauwinet will show off a brand new look. Nantucket's only Relais & Châteaux property—an adults-only escape that’s home to the popular TOPPER’S Restaurant—has been an institution for 30 years. Now, The Wauwinet is undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation that will touch all 32 guestrooms, with special attention paid to upgrading the bathrooms, plus the three cottages. Also to be redesigned will be the lobby’s library, which plays host to the lovely tradition of a Port and cheese hour at the end of the day.
Located 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts, the island of Nantucket retains the historic charm lingering from its days as the world’s whaling capital in the 19th century. It’s also a place of singular beauty, long appreciated as a refuge for the East Coast’s busy urbanites. The Wauwinet is privy to both this island history—the original Wauwinet House first welcomed guests in 1875—and Nantucket’s natural beauty, as the hotel is flanked by private beaches on both the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Bay, next to the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. Before arrival, The Wauwinet’s advance concierge works with guests so they can get the most out of their island escape: Setting up boat excursions, restaurant reservations, spa treatments and the like.
Tip: Planning your summer jaunt to the island? Note that JetBlue will be expanding its summer service to Nantucket from LaGuardia and Westchester. (JetBlue already connects Nantucket with JFK, Boston and Washington DC.)
