Wilderness Safaris is back in Chikwenya. Now open on the eastern boundary of Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe, the Chikwenya camp is situated in a private concession at the confluence of the Sapi and Zambezi Rivers. Wilderness last operated Chikwenya in 2006— and now it’s been completely rebuilt as an intimate camp with six canvas tents on low wooden decks. The tents are connected by walkways to the raised main area, which consists of a lounge, dining and bar area. Guests may also view the scenery and wildlife from the pool, deck and fireplace. The camp has spectacular views overlooking the Zambezi River and the Rift Valley escarpment.
Keith Vincent, CEO of Wilderness Safaris, describes Chikwenya as “one of the most beautiful places for a camp in southern Africa.”
The concession offers a diverse variety of habitat— floodplain grasslands and forest— which attracts a large amount of wildlife. And camp guests will have exclusive access to the mouth of the Sapi River and Chikwenya Island. Safari activities include interpretive day and night game drives, guided nature walks, boating, canoeing and catch-and-release fishing. You might spy buffalo, elephant, kudu, zebra, hippo, leopard, lion, and nyala; this terrain is also optimal for birders.
Note that even though the camp just opened, the season ends on November 15, 2018. The 2019 season will run from April 1 to November 15.
With Chikwenya as part of the portfolio in Zimbabwe, Wilderness can offer guests a number of complementary safari options across the country. First founded in Botswana in 1983, this renowned ecotourism operator offers authentic experiences in eight countries: Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
