Dreaming of an exotic tropical escape? Just 18 miles off the east coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar has long lured vacationers to white sand beaches and the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Now there’s a new luxury beach resort to add to your wish list. Recently opened on the northern tip of Unguja (Zanzibar’s main island), Zuri Zanzibar is about an hour and a half from Stone Town, the UNESCO World Heritage site that flourished as a trade capital centuries ago.
Zuri Zanzibar is a member of Design Hotels—a first in the Tanzanian archipelago for the curated hotel collection. The resort takes its name from the Swahili word for “beautiful.” Overlooking Kendwa beach, Zuri Zanzibar was built with environmentally sustainable methods as a mix of contemporary design and traditional African craftsmanship. There are 55 thatched bungalows and stilted villas—most with ocean views, and connected via verdant pathways to the main public areas. You’ll find an open-air villa layout featuring a terrace and outdoor shower, and eye-catching custom artwork that was commissioned from local artists. A dedicated villa host can arrange Zanzibar excursions and private dinners.
Speaking of food: Zuri Zanzibar offers a number of restaurants for taking in the sunset. Go casual on the beach or choose a gourmet experience at Upendo. Guests can choose full- or half-board, or all-inclusive dining options. An on-site spice garden provides ginger, turmeric, pepper and other spices for which the island is famous. Note that cooking classes are available. Resort facilities include a 100-foot infinity pool, a library, a pool table, a wellness center with an outdoor gym and yoga studio, plus water sports.
