Saudi Arabia’s AlUla Earns DarkSky Certification

The city of AlUla in Saudi Arabia has been awarded the International DarkSky Park Certification, recognizing its potential for stargazing and astrotourism. The certification from the U.S.-based organization DarkSky International affirms AlUla’s commitment to minimizing light pollution, preserving and protecting the night-time environment.

Here are the top five stargazing spots for travelers seeking to experience AlUla’s clear skies:

1. The Dancing Rocks in Raggasat Valley offer a blend of natural wonder and cosmic beauty. These rock formations, sculpted by the forces of nature, appear to sway in unison, almost as if they are dancing under the stars.

2. An hour outside of AlUla’s city center lies Gharameel, where rock pillars stretch skyward, creating a landscape that offers stargazing opportunities. Gharameel’s dark skies and the vertical rock formations create a one-of-a-kind visual experience. Travelers can pick from a variety of hikes and tours of this natural marvel.

3. Ashar Valley, known for its rock formations surrounding luxury resorts, provides a luxurious stargazing experience. Whether staying at the Banyan Tree AlUla, Our Habitas AlUla or at the Ashar Tented Resort, the valley’s remote location and landscapes make it an ideal setting for gazing at the night sky.

4. Travelers can head to Rainbow Rock, a landmark synonymous with celestial photography. The rock’s arched shape, hewn by time and the elements, provides the perfect foreground for a night sky brimming with stars.

5. One of AlUla’s well-known historical sites, Hegra offers an ideal setting for stargazing. A little-known but perfect spot is the hill that overlooks the Tomb of Lihyan. Also known as the Son of Kuza, this instantly recognizable structure is the most iconic tomb at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. By day, it tells the story of the Nabataean civilizations that once thrived in AlUla. At night, it becomes a sanctuary for stargazing and remarkable night-time views.
