Continuing our Top Three Management Tips, we spoke with Julia Douglas, president of Jet Set World Travel, Inc., who featured in our March 2010 issue. Douglas was a property broker for Willis in Lloyds of London before “she realized the power of creativity,” it says on her bio on Jet Set’s website.
She founded Jet Set World Travel, Inc. in 2005 with her best friend, Lauren Maggard. When she opened the agency, she intended to combine the travel and concierge concepts. Since then, she has seen steady growth—15 to 25 percent a year—in her agency. Here are her top tips:
1. Know Your “Why”
Ensure your team understands and believes your brand story. Without a clear identity and purpose, it’s more challenging to stand out to your clients and the competition. (Douglas recommends reading Simon Sinek’s Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action.)
2. Culture Rivals Compensation
We all love to earn a comfortable living, but your colleague’s character and the company culture are critically important to their retention.
3. Encourage Specialization
The more focused an advisor’s destination expertise, the more successfully they can act as a wingman versus a middleman when working with clients.
