South Camp at the andBeyond Bateleur Camp in the Maasai Mara National Reserve officially opened this month, completing the renovation and rebuild of the property. North Camp, which opened in March, is now joined by South Camp and its new gin bar, pool, spa, safari shop and fitness center with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the plains.
Coffee and Gin Bar
The new interactive bar serves Kenyan coffee by day and specialty gin cocktails by night. The bar serves 16 different types of craft gin, including Elephant Gin, handcrafted with rare African botanicals. Fifteen percent of the profits from each bottle sold go towards elephant conservation and each label is hand-written by a calligrapher and carries the name of a past tusker or elephant that its partner foundations currently help to protect.
Tents
African-style and design touches have updated the camp, while it maintains its classical and romantic safari feel. The camp’s original designers, Fox Browne Creative, were charged with creating its new look. Highlights include an upholstered leather bed, hardwood floors, wallpaper interpreting old explorer maps and a glassed-in bathroom with a copper tub and an outdoor shower with a Mara view.
Lodge
The lodge sits right below the Oloololo Escarpment, famous for its backdrop role in "Out of Africa." Both North and South Camp look out at the Maasai Mara and are just over a mile from the Mara River (the location of the treacherous river crossings during the Great Migration).
No Plastic
Kenya recently implemented a new law banishing the use of plastic bags and andBeyond is using that momentum and expanding to water bottles. Not a single plastic bottle is found on property. The bottling plant on-property provides both flat and sparkling water in glass bottles that are washed and reused.
Wildlife
Guests can see the varied wildlife that surrounds the hotel, including the “big five” (lions, elephants, buffalos, rhinos and leopards) as well as giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, cheetahs, ostriches, baboons and some resident warthogs that can be seen nibbling on the grass in front of the tents.
During their stay, guests can also enjoy morning coffee or tea delivered by the staff, massages, time spent at the new pool, morning and evening game drives, and more.
