The Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) has announced the Abu Dhabi Classics Music Program for the 2017-2018 season that will feature contemporary Arab and Western classical musicians from around the world.
The eight-month program will showcase performances through its well-known music series, including:
- The Abu Dhabi Classics (running from October 2017 to May 2018)
- Umsiyat (January 2018)
- The Bait Al Oud Concert Series (year-round music program)
- The Emirati Music Series (year-round music program)
Along with concerts and performances going on around the Emirates, the Music Program will provide public programs that include talks, masterclasses, and lectures all across Abu Dhabi.
“Music has played an essential role in Emirati life for centuries, binding people together and leaving a legacy that we have a duty to preserve long into the future. Our Music Program blends classical and contemporary, spans different continents and cultures, and has a central theme of unifying different age groups and nationalities through a collective passion for music,” said HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, the Director General of the TCA Abu Dhabi.
Abu Dhabi Classics
Abu Dhabi Classics will begin a new season on October 12 with a concert by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra from Switzerland at the Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain. The orchestra will play an evening of Grieg, Wagner, and Beethoven, featuring US piano player Nicholas Angelich. Further concerts as a part of Abu Dhabi Classics are set to be announced soon.
The Emirati Music Series
The Emirati Music Series will present concerts with prominent Emirati singers and musicians, like Ahmed Al Hosani, Said Al Salem, and Oud master Faisal Al Saari. Most notably, Hosani will be giving a performance on Delma Island that will feature both classical and modern Arabian music.
The Bait Al Oud Series
Under the artistic direction of musician Naseer Shamma, The Bait Al Oud musical academy will also hold a series of concerts. The program is focused on becoming a regional hub for young Emirati musicians training with traditional Arabic instruments.
Umsiyat
A new series of Umsiyat will begin in January 2018 with outdoor performances that combine spiritual music and poetry from the United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan, Lebanon, Pakistan and Turkey. Renowned artists Faiz Ali Faiz and Alim Qasimov will be among the noteworthy musicians performing with the group.
