Big Five Tours and Expeditions has expanded its tours across India to encompass more of the country. With India now among the top five largest economies in the world, it is a crucial time to balance the distribution of the tourism industry, and therefore tourism income, beyond Rajasthan and across the other states. Big Five is accomplishing this by introducing the lesser-known regions and with sustainability at the forefront.
The company is continuously adapting, changing and adding to its programs; however, the route it is taking with its India offering is more of an overhaul. While the popular tourist attractions are still included in the itinerary options, they are no longer the focal point as much as the unknown areas and lesser visited sites.
For instance, Big Five’s newest program, “Tea Leaves of India” is a journey through the history and culture of Eastern India on curated walks. Travelers will drive through the countryside of the eastern state of West Bengal, and witness historic grandeur at a century-old mansion Bari Kothi. The experience includes a two-night river cruise from Mayapur to Chandernagore, stopping at small villages and historical sites along the way. In Kolkata, guests will learn about the bustling trade and history of trade battles. In Balakhana, guests can enjoy a two-night stay at one of the only two remaining plantations, where the hosts will regale them with stories and afternoon teas.
Big Five’s focus in India is to create more tourism-based jobs in the remote areas of the country, allowing them to join the sustainable tourism conversation. Most India itineraries have been refreshed for 2023 and allow access to lesser visited areas of the country, including Barwara in Rajasthan and Kaziranga in Assam, to name a few.
