Explora has announced that the private home of prolific re-wilding philanthropists Douglas and Kristine Tompkins is now available for stays. Built atop a hill by the Tompkins in 2009 from a design by architect Francisco Morandé Ruiz-Tagle and the late Douglas Tompkins, Casa Butler rises amid the meadows of the Patagonian pampa in the heart of the Patagonia National Park in the Aysén region of Chile.
The Tompkins and Tompkins Conservation have protected the area for three decades, re-wilding nature in urgent response to global biodiversity loss and the climate crisis. Over the past 20 years, Tompkins Conservation has helped protect and re-wild nearly 15 million acres across Chile and Argentina.
An exclusive-use property equipped for seven persons, the 3,573-square-foot villa has high ceilings, three bedrooms, four bathrooms, plus a central space that connects the living-dining room and the kitchen. With its layout and setting, the villa is ideal for small groups of family or friends. The flooring is based on recycled wood blocks from old factories in Buenos Aires, giving the feel of old cobblestone streets underfoot. The exterior is of local sandstone, with recycled corrugated copper roofing and windows and doors made of rauli wood native to the Andes of Chile and Argentina. The property meets high energy efficiency standards, with a solar power system using parabolic solar panels and geothermal energy for indoor ventilation.
Travelers staying at Casa Butler have all services provided by Explora, including meals and beverages served in the main dining room of Explora Patagonia National Park; a private exploration service for the group; Wi-Fi; and transfers to and from Balmaceda Airport in Coihaique, Chile. Groups also enjoy access to a shuttle service between Casa Butler and the lodge.
Explora in Patagonia National Park offers over 35 explorations in a range of modalities, including hiking, overland crossings, bike or e-bike outings, self-guided tours, kayaking, high mountain excursions, and combinations thereof. Levels range from basic to advanced, and most explorations are designed to be enjoyed by adults and children alike. Explora also offers a spa for guests, with three hot tubs located near the lodge for travelers to relax after a day of exploration.
