Virtual travel experiences are all the rage right now — and understandably so. If you need to get your travel “fix,” here are some options you need to know about.
The Faroe Islands launched an innovative travel tool. The new site will allow virtual visitors to explore the Faroes’ rugged mountains and see its waterfalls and traditional grass-roofed houses up close by interacting live with a local Faroese, who will act as their eyes, ears and body on a virtual exploratory tour of the destination. Pretty cool! The Faroese locals will be equipped with a live video camera, allowing virtual visitors not only to see the views from an on-the-spot perspective, but also control where and how they explore, by using their computer or phone keypad to turn, walk, run and even jump.
There’s also myriad ways to explore France, whether its Claude Monet’s home, the Eiffel Tower or Bordeaux’s Fine Arts Museum.
For another European virtual museum visit, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has debuted the digital initiative #GuggenheimBilbaoLive, showing off “behind-the-scenes” aspects of the museum during its temporary closure. The new virtual content will highlight the director general, the curators and other people working in the museum. They will discuss their hands-on experience, share their favorite works of art from the collection, anecdotes and trivia about the current exhibitions, and will answer questions any visitor may pose.
Heritage Malta is offering 25 virtual tours of top destinations, including the Grandmaster’s Palace, Fort St. Elmo National War Museum, Hal Saflieni Hypogeum and the Megalithic Temples.
Missing out on a chance to take in the Northern Lights? Lights over Lapland has brought together some of Europe’s best photographers and virtual reality videographers to create three experiences for those suffering wanderlust to virtually travel to Northern Europe. Armchair travelers will visit ICEHOTEL, meet local huskies and reindeer, go dogsledding and reindeer sledding and finally join a Northern Lights hunt.
