Queenstown helicopter company Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters announced its first overnight trip. Called the Greenstone Experience, the tour takes guests to the heart of the Greenstone Valley where they can participate in guided fishing or hiking.
The helicopter company flies participants to the rustic Te Whare Pounamu (Greenstone Hut), located near the upper reaches of Whakatipu Waimāori (Lake Wakatipu). After landing in the middle of the day, guests can spend the afternoon fishing, hiking or relaxing.
“On one side the hut is surrounded by native beech forest,” says General Manager Aviation Pat West. “On the other there’s a spectacular view of the valley floor, covered in tussocks with a meandering river and mountains in the distance.”
Guests will receive a hearty dinner at Te Whare Pounamu, where they will have bunk-style sleeping arrangements. Visitors can spend the next morning exploring the valley before returning to Queenstown.
Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters will run the Greenstone Experience until April 2019. The package includes return helicopter flights, accommodation, dinner and breakfast, but does not cover a fishing license. Visitors can also choose the daytime option, which includes guided fishing or hiking and a picnic lunch.
Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters, based in New Zealand, takes travelers on scenic flights around Queenstown, Mount Aspiring, Fiordland and Milford Sounds. It is a part of Ngāi Tahu Tourism, one of Aotearoa’s leading tourism operators. Ngāi Tahu Tourism hosts more than one million customers each year across its 14 businesses.
