With work expected to last until 2021, Adelaide Airport announced it will begin a $165 million expansion this month. The renovations will include improving the international arrivals and departures experience and increasing the retail area by over 80 percent.
International improvements will include another, longer baggage belt for arrivals, increased space for emigration and immigration, more security screening and a bigger duty-free area for arrivals and departures.
General improvements will focus on refurbishing retail areas and expanding dining and retail space for both domestic and international travelers. The airport will also be adding a new international lounge, relocating the Virgin Australia Lounge and expanding office space for terminal tenants.
The renovations are the largest since the terminal opened in 2005. They will increase its footprint by 16,500 square meters, nearly half of which will be in retail space.
Adelaide Airport has seen international passenger numbers triple since 2005, with airlines such as China Southern Airlines, Emirates Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Air New Zealand currently operating at the airport.
Adelaide Airport Chairman Rob Chapman said the additional space will increase the airport’s options in negotiating with international airline partners.
In addition to the expansion, a new $50 million, 165-room Atura hotel will open in the upcoming winter quarter. The new hotel will directly link to the existing terminal.
